Shell’s chemical business operations in the U.S. are performed through Shell Chemical LP, which is one of nearly 70 companies engaged in chemicals businesses for the Shell Group of companies. With significant investments in manufacturing assets around the world - both direct and through joint ventures - the Shell chemicals companies number among the largest petrochemical producers in the world. Shell Chemical LP produces about 9,072 kilotonnes (20 billion pounds) of chemicals annually, which are sold primarily to industrial markets in the United States. Shell Chemical LP is currently seeking a Control Systems Engineer for its Norco, Louisiana location.

Responsibilities:


In this position, you will be responsible for technical assurance and performance of the control systems for your assigned operating unit(s). Control systems include instrumentation, Instrumented Protective Functions (IPF), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Basic Process Control Systems (BPCS) and Advanced Process Control (APC) applications. These systems must routinely operate with the reliability and performance necessary to achieve required process unit results. Key Accountabilities Include: - Monitor performance of BPCS, APC and information applications - Review Instrumented Protective Function (IPF) classifications to insure compliance with corporate and PSM standards - Identify and analyze problems due to process and control system interactions - Update IPF, BPCS, APC and information system documentation - Tuning of base level and advanced control loops - Maintain multivariable and custom control strategies at levels necessary to achieve optimum unit performance - Develop response models for on-line control - Identify and evaluate new information and control applications that enhance profitability and reliability - Develop functional specifications and detail design for additions or modifications to control/information systems - Validate/update control system incentives - Implement new BPCS and APC to improve cost position and productivity - Technical Assurance Coordinator for Control Systems Management of Change (MOC). - Mentors and develops less experienced engineers and inspectors - Develop training packages and organize technical training for information and control systems applications



Requirements:


To be considered for this position, you must possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering field and have approximately 3-10 years experience in instrumentation and process control. You will have excellent computer programming skills (FORTRAN, Pascal) and a good background on base level control and instrumentation (pneumatic, electronic, DCS, etc.). Although not required, the following skills/knowledge are desired: Knowledge of steady state process simulation packages (SimSci, Aspen, etc.)control algorithm implementation for PROSS II, FLIC and LCN platforms, Yokogawa DCS Hardware and Control software, Advanced Control Algorithms (SMOC, QDMC, ROC, Advanced Level Control, etc.), and Process Control Technology Package (PCTP). Additional Requirements Include: - Good communication skills (both oral / written) - Organizational / planning skills (ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously) - Ability to influence even though position does not include supervisory responsibility - Base layer process control skills - Refining and Chemical Processes skills - DCS systems and instrumentation skills In addition to the tasks outlined in this job description, you may be assigned other responsibilities as needed.
